Handicapper gives up attempt to quantify Arkle’s greatness | Greg Wood

Kauto Star is as close to the limit of brilliance as any horse can get, so Arkle cannot have been better Numbers are never in short supply when the official handicappers gather to pass judgment on a racing season and yesterday’s event to assess and celebrate the 2009-10 jumps season was no different. If it were possible to drown in figures, they would have been handing out snorkels at the door. Yet one number was conspicuously absent

• Champion trainer blames soft ground for 2-11 shot’s defeat • Inchidaly Rock preferred to Taranis today at Cheltenham Paul Nicholls stood in the unsaddling enclosure here, cursing himself loudly and repeatedly. The champion trainer has had little experience of unexpected defeat this season and seemed stunned after watching Tataniano, a leading contender for the Arkle Trophy at the Cheltenham Festival, get turned over at odds of 2-11 in a three-horse race. Welsh Champion Hurdle will not be saved

• Lack of funding prevents restaging of Ffos Las race • Punchestowns to take on stablemate Long Run in RSA Chase Racing fans in Wales will need to wait another year for the return of the Welsh Champion Hurdle after Ffos Las racecourse decided that it will not be re-scheduled for this Sunday, following the abandonment of the original fixture last weekend. Officials at Ffos Las were informed today that, because the revived race – last staged at Chepstow in 2002 – is not part of the jumps Pattern, it does not qualify for additional central funding. The course could have funded the prize itself, or run for a reduced purse, but has decided instead to let the race lapse until 2011. “It’s obviously disappointing but these things happen when you work with the weather and we remain committed to the race for the future,” Tim Long, the clerk of the course at Ffos Las, said.
