The Ffos Las racecourse is set in the stunning backdrop of the Gwendraeth valley in Wales. In the centre of the perfectly elliptical track lies a moor with a gently meandering river which will provide endless entertainment when people try to cross it. This magnificent race course drips the essence of Wales’ countryside; wild, untameable and epically insane. The idea of building a racecourse here must have required a touch of madness, but somehow it has worked. It’s hard to believe that this was the site of the largest open coal mine in Europe…
The lofty task to create this racetrack was given to the South Wales Civil engineering company The Walters Group, headed by Mr David Walter. To take one look at the track would be to know that they are experts in their field and have created something truly special in Ffos Las.
Never has there been a better place built for race horses. Surely to race here at any point in a career would be a privilege.
The track itself is 60metres wide and has miles of drainage to keep the track in top condition for the many races this prestigious racetrack looks set to hold, for example the National Hunt and Flat races. It has ample facilities and views for race-goers like the large parking lot, bar, private boxes for hospitality events and venues for weddings.
Those who thought that horse racing is a sport for adults would be wrong, for there is several family fun days taking place in the near future which would create a good opportunity to get Wales’ youth interested in the sport and make stars for the future.
Thankfully and rightfully, the first man to win at Ffos Las was a Welshman, so evidently this racetrack is aware of occasion.
The sheer quality of this racecourse hints at a national competition being hosted here, time can only tell but if they did they would join other greats on the sporting calendar like Wimbledon and Ascot.
Ffos Las is the first racetrack to be built in Britain for over 80 years, so understandably there is a lot of excitement and hype surrounding the usually calm valley of Gwendraeth. It seems to be the place to be in the racing world, and it is a good idea for a family day out in the summer. Undoubtedly it would be a memorable day.
