• Horse swerves violently left then right in handicap at Newcastle • Jockey Jason Behan and trainer Eamon Tyrell face possible ban Jockey Jason Behan may have had a low profile in Britain, but that seems sure to change after his ride aboard Casela Park, described by one racing expert as “one of the most extraordinary I have ever seen”, was referred to the British Horseracing Authority by stewards at Newcastle today. Behan, who rode out his claim in the 1990s but has had only a handful of rides since his last winner back in 2005, finished sixth of the 12 runners in the seven furlong handicap aboard the Eamon Tyrell-trained Casela Park. Making just his second start for the stable, Casela Park was supported in from 10-1 to 8-1 on-course and having been held up in the rear, was staying on well from halfway when he started to violently swerve from left to right. Despite his actions, Casela Park continued to make up ground and eventually finished just over two lengths behind the winner

• Eddie Ahern excels on 14-1 shot from unfavoured outside draw • Tactic shocks odds-on shot Beauty in Curragh highlight Trainer Donald McCain, who is making quite a name for himself over jumps, won his biggest prize on the Flat when Overturn won the £175,000 Northumberland Plate at Newcastle – but missed the celebrations as he was stuck on the M6 with a punctured tyre. Confident of his mount’s stamina, Eddie Ahern took 14-1 chance Overturn across from draw 21 in an unfavoured outside stall into an early lead and kept up a relentless gallop to score by 2¾ lengths from Drunken Sailor who finished well having had a troubled run in the long home straight. McCain explained: “We had a tyre blow-out on the M6 and we rang any number of garages trying to get a new tyre for a Maserati but failed. We managed to hear the race commentary over the phone in the end and the car had to be brought back on the back of a truck.

Four weeks ago, a muscle problem was said to have been identified which would keep him out of the race but, after the six-year-old schooled well at Nicky Henderson’s Lambourn yard last Wednesday, the decision was taken that he would run after all. Blinkered for the first time, Celestial Halo set the early pace, stalked by Binocular’s stablemate Zaynar.

• Nicky Henderson clears up doubts over three-year-old • Tony McCoy to ride last year’s third-placed finisher Nicky Henderson has confirmed that Binocular will run in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham on Tuesday. Third in the race last year, JP McManus’ six-year-old had been doubtful for some time following a couple of below-par efforts this season. Indeed he had initially been ruled out of the race by Henderson on 17 February after suffering a muscle problem, but after a pleasing schooling session on Wednesday, he came through a gallop on Friday morning with flying colours

What odds should he be for the race, now that we know he is a trifle unwell? If you back Solwhit now, your bet is effectively a double – you are betting that he is good enough to win the race and also that he will turn up in peak condition on the day. Before he coughed on the gallops, he was a 4-1 shot, so let’s say that’s a fair assessment of the chances of a fully fit Solwhit.
